2013 Trans-Tasman 160m

For a bit of top-band action Mark VK5QI and I decided to attempt the Trans-Tasman 160m contest to be held on the 15th of June . As with several hamradio portable expeditions this year it was thrown together at the last minuet with the decision to put in an effort only decided the Wednesday before the contest. The plan came together during discussions over repeater during drive time. Trevor 5ZTJ suggested Burra Creek Gorge as he had been there previously and it was RF quiet.

With a forecast for snow we headed up on Saturday afternoon to pitch the tent and set up the antenna. We had a few problems with the antenna launcher so it resorted to a fishing sinker being thrown over the large gum trees. With the line up in the we lifted up the 160m dipole into position but it was hard to see due to the olive drab antenna wire. The station was set up inside the tent and as the sun set a fire was started to keep warm and cook dinner on.

We quickly got down to operating as the club call VK5ARG and began making contacts. With both of us being new to 160 we a little unsure of what to expect. Contact ware hard work as there was atmospherics from the storm front that was threatening to drop snow on the peaks around us. We heard 1-2 ZLs but did not manage to work them on our 100W from a IC-7000. However we did manage to work VK 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 netting us a few bonus points.

Thankfully it did not snow, it was just very very cold. but a good time was had by all.
